As part of the Healthy Living Initiative, Ear to the Ground is one of Mid Beds District Councils most innovative and exciting projects. The project aims to find, research and deliver information to give the community opportunity to access information without the usual barriers.
The work is split into three target groups - Young People
- Families
- and Older People
The young peoples’ side is supported by the Youth & Community Safety Officer (08458 495 008) at Mid Bed District Council. The community information providers are called Ears, delivering information using new and exciting methods. Text message surveys, fold out information leaflets, community safety Christmas cards, interactive notice boards and Ear bags full of tricks are all ways that the Ears have shared and collected information. We currently have 9 Ears across the district each delivering information to the local area. Keep an eye out in your town/village or parish for an Ear near you.
You’ve heard about the Taxi Token project?
Well, this is one better! Organised by the same people, the Transport Token scheme allows young people from across Mid Beds to have free or cheaper transport to get to projects, clubs, events or activities. It has been extended from taxi’s, to include Stagecoach East buses, Thameslink trains and WAGN trains, as well as including 9 different taxi companies from across Bedfordshire.
If you would like to attend a project or group, but have problems getting there, get the group to give us a call, and we can sort out Transport Tokens, which they can then give to you for free!
For more details, please contact:

Across Mid Beds there are 11 Community Safety Groups who are community led groups deciding what community safety issues are relevant to their town/village/parish, then devising initiatives to alleviate the situation.
They consist of between 7-15 members of public and are not sub groups of town/parish councils.
Community Safety Groups are keen for Young People to get involved, give your views and share new ideas with them.
If you want your voice heard on community safety then contact the Youth & Community Safety team at Mid Beds District Council here: comsafe@midbeds.gov.uk, or call Will (for details see right) and we will find one in your area! Transport costs will be covered, so if you’re interested, give us a ring!

All was not as it seemed at Samuel Whitbread Upper School on Wednesday 23 May, when students held a silent rave SSSHHH!
STOP (Students Together Organising Projects)
is a group of young people working with
Mid Beds District Council.
They organised the silent rave to mark Noise Action Week (21-25 May) and this event followed their successful 'Air Guitar' competition last year.
Young people were invited to put on their headphones and dance to a pre-selected track. While the silent ravers were pulling some mean shapes on the dance floor, a troop of young people handed out lollipops and information cards, giving the low-down on all things noise action related.
No one made any noise SSSHHH!
Will Sparrow, Youth and Community Safety Officer at Mid Beds District Council has been working with STOP and the school to organise the event.
He said:
"Young people have always had innovative and creative ideas and this year's Noise Action Week event is no exception. Hopefully the STOP group's hard work will pay off and young people will understand a little more about noise and the wider effects on the quality of life for the community."

Spark are a group of young people from Redborne Upper School who have been working together since December 2004 to write, develop and perform a play looking at issues of alcohol in the family – its effects for problem drinkers, friends, brothers and sisters and how to access support.
The group chose the name Spark to represent their energy and positive outlook. They meet weekly to develop their play and resources, and have had drama training and alcohol awareness training. The group are supported by workers from Mid Beds District Council and PUKE. After the play, they are planning to start work on a new project, which will help young people in their local area.
SPARK are performing their play to young people in Y7-8 at school throughout the summer term, so watch out for them in your school soon!
A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO ASK THE QUESTIONS TO THE PEOPLE
WHO MAKE THE DECISIONS
March 16th will see the first young people’s question time held in Bedford with a panel of six key local and national figures being asked topical questions from around 700 young people.

The panel will not only give young people a chance to question their local MP but will also give you a chance to ask a question to a key figure from the Conservative and Liberal democrat party.
The event will be chaired by a local radio presenter and may also include key decision makers from other organisations (At time of going to print the group are still waiting to hear confirmation from other invited panel members)
If you have a question you would like to ask the panel or you are interested in attending the event please email rdenton@bedford.gov.uk

Young people from across the Sandy area, meet a couple of times each month at either Sandy Youth Centre or Sandy Upper School to discuss different projects, initiatives and ideas which can help to improve life for young people in Sandy.
There are between 10 – 15 young people who come to SAY meetings currently, but we always have space for more! The group are supported by Mid Beds District Council and Beds County Council, but are fully youth led – so if you like making decisions, this is the group for you!
To date, the group have taken part in a number of different events and activities, including:
- Piloting the transport token project
- Organising personal safety evenings for young women in Sandy
- Organising a one-day event for 1000 students from Sandy Upper School looking at Taboo topics (self harm, sexuality, drugs etc)
- Writing, filming, directing and publicising a video about drugs, misuse and awareness raising.
The group decide what local issues they want to tackle, then create an innovative project or activity to start to work through the problems.
