Sexual Health and Young People
All you need to know…
You might have heard a lot about sexual health on the TV & radio recently –
sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancies, abortions, condoms etc.
It can all be a bit hectic but the most important thing to remember is not to be pushed into
doing anything you don’t want to. Choosing to have sex is nobody else’s choice but YOUR’S.
If you do decide to have sex, get all the right info first.
Here is a quick look at what’s what in sexual health….
- You CAN get pregnant the first time you have sex –
You CAN get pregnant during your period –
You CAN get pregnant standing up.
- Chlamydia is the most common curable sexually transmitted infection in the UK. It is easily treated with antibiotics but left untreated it can cause fertility problems in both men and women.
- Emergency Contraceptive pills can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex to prevent a pregnancy.
- Condoms if used correctly, can protect against most sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS and pregnancies but the best way to protect yourself is not to have sex at all.
- As many as 3 out of every 4 young people do not have sex before they are aged 16 – there is no perfect age to start having sex…it needs to be right for you.
