Have you heard of
Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
?

by Claire Peter, PUKE worker

I always thought to myself that it wasn't fair
that women couldn’t drink during pregnancy...

...but knowing the real reasons why women shouldn’t drink has completely changed my mind.

By the time you finish reading this, you may have even changed your mind!

Alcohol is a drug and like any other drug it can be dangerous to an unborn baby. Think about how it can affect a fully-grown adult and now think about a baby that is growing and has not developed its organs yet. What do you think the effects would be on the baby?

Would it still be cute?

I spent a lot of time looking into the subject and doing research and what I found out shocked me. Not only did I know nothing about the subject but also other people had never heard of it.

Just recently actress Rachel Weisz (The Mummy, Constantine) caused a stir with her comments on drinking and pregnancy. When asked about her opinion on drinking during pregnancy, the Oscar-winning actress, admitted that she thought a little bit here and there was okay.

The 35-year-old, who recently gave birth to her first child, said she thought it was "fine" for expectant mothers to have a glass of wine after the first three months. British-born Miss Weisz added:
"I mean in Europe they drink it".

Rachel Weisz

This doesn’t mean she is stupid or uncaring but it just goes to show the lack of information out there for people.

FASD is a range of mental and/or physical disabilities developed during pregnancy

If a baby is born with FASD, nothing can get rid of the effects and it may not be detected until later on in the baby’s development

THIS IS FASAWARE UK's
MESSAGE TO PREGNANT WOMEN. TO VISIT THEIR SITE, PLEASE CLICK ON THE ADVERT

The physical effects of FASD can include:

  • Flat mid-face
  • Low birth weight
  • Short upturned nose
  • Small or wide spaced eyes

What can the behaviour of FASD children be?

  • Demanding
  • Destructive
  • Does not learn from experience
  • Extremes in behaviour - very loving to very hateful
  • Lengthy temper tantrums
  • Unable to sit still, fidgets, wiggles

In some cases there maybe no physical effects but there may be mental health issues or visa versa.

The effects can depend on a number of things: how much alcohol has been drunk, at what stage in the pregnancy the alcohol has been drunk and how healthy the mother is – no two women are the same.

Cutting alcohol out can sometimes be difficult, so here are some tips:

  • Find another way to relax – listening to music, watching films, gentle sports, yoga, swimming…
  • Hang out with people who do not focus on drinking alcohol
  • Try non-alcoholic drinks - you may find a new favourite!
  • You can check out recipes for non-alcoholic cocktails on the internet or see our latest Mocktail on the Home page.

FASD is 100% preventable!

FASD is caused by a mother drinking alcohol at any time
through out the pregnancy

These effects are there for life.
