Who

Cats
Protection?
Well, Cats Protection is the UK’s leading feline welfare charity.
Our story began in 1927 when a group of cat lovers got together
to promote the interests of cats. A lot has changed since then, but
our main aims have stayed the same; to rehome unwanted and abandoned cats in loving new homes, to encourage neutering
and to inform the public about cats and their care.
Throughout history, cats have been seen as both friends and foes; the ancient Egyptians thought they were gods, but in the Middle Ages people thought they were evil. Today, however, they are Britain’s favourite domestic pet.
Last year we rehomed 52,000 cats and kittens, helped to neuter nearly 100,000 and issued 560,000 leaflets to educate the public on key issues. The vast majority of our cat welfare work is carried out by our amazing army of dedicated volunteers.
Rehoming
Thousands of cats are abandoned every year from cute kittens to mature moggies. Rehoming is about giving them a new start with a new family who can offer them the love and attention they deserve. We never put a healthy cat to sleep and will look after a cat until a new home is found.
Neutering
In order to prevent the unplanned kittens of today becoming the unwanted cats of tomorrow, we promote neutering as the only humane way of keeping the cat population down to a manageable number. An unneutered queen can be responsible for up to a massive 20,000 descendants in just five years, while an unneutered tom is more likely to wander, fight and catch diseases, so neutering is the answer for a happier population of cats.
Our network
We have 29 adoption centres and over 250 volunteer-run branches, so there is likely to be a Cats Protection branch near to where you live. We welcome help with open arms and there is so much to be gained from giving even the smallest amount of time.
Not only will you gain new skills and make a difference to the cats in our care, there are also endless social possibilities! Donating your time is a great way to support us and have fun at the same time. However much time you have to offer, there will be a role to suit you.
Fundraising
Are you the enterprising sort? If you’re full of ideas for money-spinning events, you could make an excellent Fundraiser. Our branches rely on income from their supporters and from fundraising events to keep afloat. From garage sales and odd jobs, to quizzes or giving up your favourite food for sponsor money, there are plenty of events that will raise laughs and vital funds.
If you are interested in helping us by making some money, why not request a Cats Protection Fundraising Pack? It’s crammed full of ideas that will help you on your way. Click to email here
Other volunteering
If you are over the age of 16 there are plenty of opportunities on the volunteering front. Whether you’re a good organiser, a people person, creative or a hands-on type, there’s lots that you can do to help.
If you’re a good organiser, there are important administrative roles available, while if you’re good with people, there are numerous prospects assisting with home visits or fundraising events. Creative skills? We desperately need website editors and publicity officers to promote our work.
Of course, if you love cats and are more of a hands-on type, help is always welcome! From the all-important job of cat cuddling to feeding moggies and cleaning their pens, there are several chances to help by getting close to the cats. If retail work appeals to you, there may be opportunities in one of our charity shops.
Cats in the classroom
We all have to go to school and sometimes it can get a bit boring, so why not try and make things more interesting by learning about cats?
Ask your teacher if they would be willing to have a look at one of our Education Packs. Work experience beckoning? There may be opportunities at your local Cats Protection adoption centre – again, ask your teacher about this.
