“Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?”

For many, Christmas is a time of joy and celebration with family and friends but for others it may be a time of sadness or anxiety caused by financial pressures or loneliness. Looking after our mental health is one seasonal gift we can all give both to ourselves, and to others.

The message is simple: be aware. Keep a check on how you are feeling and how pressure may be building up (see tips for mental wellbeing below). You might also be able to make things a little easier for those who are vulnerable or down by just being there to listen and talk things through. Mental health is just as important as physical health over this festive season.

Here are some basic tips for mental wellbeing at this time of year:

  • Ask for help – don’t be afraid to ask for help or accept it.
  • Be active – physical activity can improve your mental wellbeing.
  • Be with people – don’t isolate yourself – sometimes chatting to others can make you feel loads better. Perhaps tell those you trust how you are feeling.
  • Try to relax – balance responsibilities and homework with recreation and leisure activities.

There are many local and national helplines which can help:

  • Samaritans – 08457 909090
  • NHS 24 – 08454 242424
  • NHS Helpline – 0800 224488
  • Domestic Abuse Helpline – 0800 027 1234
  • Childline – 0800 1111
  • Parentline – 1890 927277

Christmas is a time for giving, make sure you include
yourself in this and take time out from worry and stress.
