Rachel and Alison from FunkeeMunkee ventured to Milton Keynes on Saturday 7th May to take part in the ‘Race for Life’.
A 5 kilometre circuit around Willen Lake was beaten by thousands of pairs of feet all to raise money for cancer research and marked the beginning of many races being held around the UK.
Cancer Research UK is the major supporter of breast cancer research in the UK, with an annual spend of over £20 million. The charity also funds research into many other types of cancer that touch women’s lives but by no means is this a girl only event! There were loads of dads, brothers and sons there to support those who were running/walking and who helped to get them sponsorship.
The weather, unfortunately, was not as committed a supporter as it was rather windy and for a brief moment - rainy (please note black clouds in above photo!) but most of the time the sun smiled down on us! You also have the choice of whether to run or walk around the 5 kilometres.
As you can see from the photo below right, those taking part could let others know who they were running for by writing it on their back – some people had photos attached as well. This really brought a personal aspect to the event- after all 1 in 3 people is affected by cancer.
Rachel from FunkeeMunkee says:
“It is great to be involved in something so positive and to know that this will now be going on around the UK for the next few months. I would recommend everyone to be part of the Race for Life this summer!”
Alison says:
“It is fun to take part in the Race for Life and as well as helping to raise valuable cash for the cause (Rachel and I raised over £160) and you receive a medal at the end, just for making it round the course”. (see above)
If you are interested in taking part there are 2 races in Bedfordshire:
Bedford: 17th July 2005 (Russell Park and
The Embankment)
Luton: 26 th June (Stockwood Park)
